Hongcun & Xidi

The two traditional villages of Xidi and Hongcun were listed as a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO. They preserve to a remarkable extent the appearance of non-urban settlements of a type that largely disappeared or was transformed during the last century. Their street plan, their architecture and decoration, and the integration of houses with comprehensive water systems are unique surviving examples. As one wanders along the path of the village, painters can be seen everywhere. People like drawing the natural and simple scenery in Hongcun. Many traditional Chinese paintings are about these two villages, which enjoy great popularity. The villages are overcrowded with people. One should use the lunchtime for a silent visit. Foreigner need a permission from the police to have access to the villages.
